I am deeply sorry to hear about the tragic incident that occurred in east Baltimore. According to reports, a gathering in the area turned into chaos on Sunday night as multiple shooters opened fire, resulting in the death of one man and the injury of seven others. Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley stated that the shooting took place on Spring Street at around 8 p.m., but no further details were provided regarding the nature of the gathering or the number of suspects involved.

Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement found several victims with gunshot wounds, who were subsequently transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Later on, additional victims came forward seeking medical attention. The deceased man has been identified as Anthony Martin, aged 36, and the other victims, comprising one female aged 41 and six males between the ages of 21 and 46, were listed in stable condition as of Monday.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott expressed his condolences, stating, “Tonight, Baltimore is grappling with the impacts of another mass shooting that has taken the life of one Baltimorean and irreparably changed several others.”

Homicide detectives and law enforcement personnel were present at the scene, conducting interviews, examining evidence, and searching for any available video footage related to the incident. Multiple firearms were discovered at the location, leading the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to offer their assistance in the ongoing investigation.

In light of this tragedy, Mayor Scott urged anyone with information to come forward and implored those who may know the individuals involved to encourage them to take responsibility for their actions.

It is disheartening to note that this incident adds to the already alarming number of mass shootings that have taken place across the United States this year. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been over 350 mass shootings in 2021 alone, resulting in the deaths of 350 individuals and over 1,500 injuries. Mass shootings are defined by both CNN and the GVA as incidents where four or more people, excluding the perpetrator, are either injured or killed.

Mayor Scott emphasized the need to address the accessibility of firearms, stating, “These tragic acts of violence – which are still too common in our city – are only possible because of the continued ease of access to guns on our streets. We cannot acknowledge this tragedy without acknowledging the role that the proliferation of guns plays in endangering our communities.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their loved ones during this difficult time. It is my sincere hope that steps are taken to prevent such senseless acts of violence and to ensure the safety of the community.
